Why Schools Should Require Uniforms
School uniforms have been used in the field of education for decades. Nonetheless, there has been a continuing debate on whether schools require uniforms or not. As expected, there are always two sides to the issue, with supporters of school uniforms emphasizing on their importance while opponents propel their disadvantage. However, despite the debates over school uniforms, they refuse to go away regardless of how we argue. Nevertheless, there are numerous achievements associated with school uniforms, making the issue difficult to ignore. For instance, uniforms in school have been associated with improved academic performance, improvement in discipline, promote safety in the learning environment, and reduce cases of school suspensions, theft, and other violations. Overall, adoption of school uniforms has many lasting benefits such as improved academic achievement and student outcomes, grade retention and improved student discipline improved attendance, and improvement of general student behavior.
School uniforms are associated with general improvement of security and sense of safety within the learning environs. According to Moland (2014), school uniforms make school environments safer, and are associated with the reduction of violence, bullying and gang activity in schools. Moland (2014) adds that the implementation of the school uniform policy in Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD) in 1994 was marked by a reduction in suspensions, assaults, thefts and vandalism within the school environs, as well as a sharp decline in weapon and drug violations. Boutelle (2008) also agrees with this argument adding that school uniforms promote safety in schools, improve the learning environment, and also reduce clothing competition, thus generally promoting learning in schools. Therefore, retention of school uniform policies and their implementation in schools without school uniforms is bound to improve school safety and enhance the learning environment and promote student outcomes.

School uniforms have a role in marking out a group of people and the uniforms makes it easier to identify the membership of a group of people in a certain environment (Baumann and Krskova, 2016). This identification is critical and helps students, teachers, and parents in a number of ways. For instance, Moland (2014) argues that school uniforms helps school administrative personnel and teachers to easily identify students, and also identify intruders who may be in school. Additionally, wearing school uniforms helps students focus on their school work away from other distractions, help students and parents resist peer pressure from fashionable clothing, and finally, reduce the likelihood of gang members from wearing gang-related colors and insignia at school. Therefore, by identifying students as a single group of people within a...
