Reading Synthesis
Religion is structured to give people guidelines and standards by which to stay closer to God. Each person who believes in the existence of a deity understands that God demands morals and particular standards from his people. In the Christian domain, people are not supposed to worship any other god apart from the supreme God himself. The message is mirrored in various contents of Islam and Buddhist teachings. This paper synthesizes five readings from five weeks with the bases rooted in the teachings of three different religions. While each weekly reading manifests a different dominant thematic expression, they all adhere to the confine of recognition of emotions and their limitations. This synthesis will be integral to unearthing just how different concepts of the religious space in week 1 through week five integrate into their attempts to redefine management of human emotions.
Emotions remain an integral component of humanity. Each person needs emotions to be motivated or to make the right decisions. Emotions such as love and hate are normally explored in human nature. However, little is said of what managing those emotions can trigger. There are decisions that people make before they blame their emotions. That leads to the desire to know the perceptions that religion has on emotional control and management. The five readings below command varying thematic expressions that can be extended to emotional control and its impacts.
There were readings for each individual week from week 7 to week 11 with emphasis put on different themes. The reading for the week is Genesis 22:1-19. The reading explores the interaction between God and Abraham. The principal theme in this reading is the faith that Abraham had in God. In the text, God instructed Abraham to “take your son and take him to Moriah where you will offer him as a burnt offering (Genesis 22:2, KJV). In a natural world, this was an impossible test bearing the love that Abraham had for his only son, Isaac. However, because of his faith in God, Abraham took his son to the instructed place and almost offered him as a sacrifice before God's intervention. The act shows the faith that Abraham had in God. He demonstrated his faith by believing that God would never hurt him.
The expression of faith in this reading could be extended to emotional management. Each individual has emotions be they love, hate, or any other. Often, emotions play a significant role in people’s decisions. Few people, for the love of their sons, would offer those same sons as sacrifice. By opting to obey God’s command, Abraham showcased an unusual emotional control. Evidently, people must trust or have faith in God no matter what their emotions demand.
Week eight focused on the theme of love that bore a significant linkage to the management of emotions too. The reading is the book of Luke 15:11-32, “parable of the prodigal son”. A story is then told of a son who squandered his share of his father’s wealth after he demanded that share. He would then suffer in exile only to return home and beg for forgiveness. The father’s act of love is a demonstration that defies normal react...
