America’s Civil War
The civil war is the deadliest American war ever. It is estimated that 360,222 from the North and 258,000 from the South, and the conflict only lasted about 4 years CITATION Guy12 \l 1033 (Gugliota, 2012). It started when the secessionist forces attacked the Fort Sumter in South Carolina following the inauguration of Abraham Lincoln as the president. The two belligerent parties in the conflict were referred to as unionists (loyalists) and secessionists (confederates). The unionists included most geographically positioned states to the north and California and Oregon. The confederates included most southern states. The main cause of the conflict is thought to be the moral issue of slave ownership. The southern states wanted to keep slaves and extend the ownership to the territories in the west while the north advocated for abortion of the slaves. The issue of slavery had narrowed down to; state rights and support of the constitution. The southern states wanted state rights to assert authority over federal government to only adopt the federal laws they wanted and, in this case, keeping slaves. On the other hand, the unionists wanted the constitutional rights of the federal government to be actionable to the state level such that states were subject to the federal laws just as the constitution had intended.
The southern states were passionate about the slaves’ issue because their economy largely depended on them. Most southerners were farmers, and they needed cheap labor in the fields. The north had fairly industrialized and was fast-moving from agriculture-based economy. To the unionists, they could afford abolition of slavery, but southerners wanted to keep slavery.
