2. Read and reflect on the story or poem and decide upon a single aspect you believe makes it interesting or special. 3. BRAINSTORM (Links to an external site.): Once you have chosen about which literary task you will argue, brainstorm and make notes about your evidence--parts of the story or poem in the form of quotations, paraphrases, or summary--you intend to use to prove how well the author succeeded.
4. THESIS: Write a thesis statement representing your ideas about the selected component. The thesis must be clearly written, provide a debatable position, and offer an appropriate qualifier(s). Here’s an example: “In the book The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Stieg Larsson, the author, uses detail, dialog, and plot brilliantly to develop the character of Lisbeth Salander and make the reader care about what happens to her.”
5. RHETORICAL STRUCTURE:
a. Introduce topic and present thesis: In an introductory paragraph, summarize background information on the literary task and author; include your essay’s thesis statement as the last sentence of the introduction.
b. Support thesis with body paragraphs: In each paragraph, write a topic sentence that connects to your thesis statement. Develop each paragraph with facts, details, examples, or reasons from the text to support each of your topic sentences.
c. Conclude your essay: Summarize the main points of your essay and explain how your conclusion connects to your thesis statement.
6. REVISE the entire document several times to ensure you have conveyed your thoughts clearly, you have developed your paragraphs with details, facts, reasons, examples or evidence, and you have shown logical transitions from one paragraph to the next.
7. EDIT: Print your essay and read it ALOUD to check your spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

Short stories are becoming popular recently. That is the reason many writers chose this genre to express themselves. Most people perceive these short stories as a reflection of society's contemporary issues. The short story ‘‘Cat Person’’ by Kristen Roupenian is one such piece of literary work that explores the previously hidden side of the modern dating systems with a subtle focus on the feminist viewpoint. It tells the story of an ill-fated potential relationship between Margot, a twenty-year-old college student, and a socially awkward older man called Robert. Margot met Robert at an indie theater movie, her workplace, and started flirting with him regardless of the man's age. Their relationship evolves through text, and after meeting in person, Margot realizes that she has created an inaccurate impression of Robert. Without any physical attachment and real interest in each other's personalities, the two sleeps together, but the experience is disastrous. Margot ends up rejecting Robert, and their relationship ends acrimoniously, with Robert responding with cruelty after facing rejection. The author’s use of metaphor makes the story interesting.
Brainstorming
Roupenian succeeded in making this story enjoyable by using metaphors. One of the outstanding metaphors is ‘‘sparkly lightness’’. The author says, ‘‘on the walk back to her dorm, she was filled with a sparkly lightness that she recognized as the sign of an incipient crush’’ (Roupenian, pp. 6). After Robert and Margot’s first date at the 7-Eleven, Margot finds Roberts attractive for the first time. The feeling of acknowledging this attraction is described as ‘‘sparkly lightness’’ in her body. This description is not an actual physical sensation. It is a vivid metaphor for expressing that frivolous feeling of liking someone romantically.
Another metaphor is ‘‘Robert shattering to pieces’’. The author says, she imagined Robert picking up his phone, reading that message, turning to glass, and shattering to pieces’’ (Roupenian, pp. 22). After the bumpy sexual encounter between Robert and Margot, Margot responded with discomfort feelings. She ignores Robert’s incessant texts until Tamara, her roommate, finally grabs her phone and tells Robert that Margot is not interested anymore. Margot is dismayed and feels guilty even after losing attraction to Robert. She thinks Robert will be heartbroken after expressing his love for her. Thus, Margot imagines Robert shattering like glass, breaking down in sadness when he reads her message.
Thesis
In the story, Cat Person, the author uses metaphors and foreshadowing brilliantly to enable the reader to understand the development of the nascent relationship between Margot and Robert, conducted primarily over the text message.
