The movie is about Callie Cain, a mother of five children with bipolar disorder. In the first scene, Callie is visibly excited about moving back to her hometown (Rhodes, 1992). She continuously tries to get her children to feel excited about the adventure. Her behavior illustrates one of the symptoms of mania, which is highlighted in the DSM-5 criteria for bipolar disorder. The symptom includes a period of mood disturbance characterized by increased energy and extreme goal-oriented activity (Varcarolis, 2018). Another sign that Callie exhibits, which is also outlined in the book, is excessive involvement in activities that are likely to result in painful consequences (Varcarolis, 2018).
