Sichuan hot pot is a Chinese delicacy that originated in Mongolia about a thousand years ago initially it was nit spicy hence the “Sichuan’ name was not present. The main and only ingredients were mutton and other various kinds of meat. Sichuan hotpot allows you to be creative with your food and it can be very spicy.
SICHUAN HOT POT: WHAT YOU SHOULD NOT MISS IN YOUR LIFE
Since I first tasted Sichuan hotpot every time it is mentioned, my stomach starts craving for some. This indeed is not just food, not just a meal but a true art of Chinese culture that can be consumed and enjoyed as long as you know where to eat it or how to make it. My first experience eating Sichuan hotpot was about three years ago around summer. I had just made a new Chinese friend, Hui, who we had a lot in common with apart from culture. We were both introverts. However, we enjoyed trying new things.
One day, Hui decided to take me to a new Chinese restaurant that was not far from where I lived. I was a bit skeptical at first but curious and open minded too. I decided to go with her and try Chinese food for the first time. Once we arrived at the restaurant the waiter came with menus to take our order. Hui smiled and told me not to go for noodles, try something unique. I laughed and told her to decide for me. Hui pointed at the one and only, ‘Sichuan hot pot’. We decided to both order the same.
I thought it would come already prepared or served but the Chinese cooks decided to make it beside our table. It was a very interesting display indeed. There was a variety of ingredients like kales, mushrooms, egg dumplings and sliced meat. The sliced meat was optional just in case one of us or both of us were vegetarians.
I observed keenly and noticed there was presence of a portable gas stove that was kept under low fire the entire time it was prepared. I started smelling a lovely aroma of pepper and chili in the air enticing my hunger for this Sichuan hot pot. At this moment I had made up my mind I needed a taste of this sweetness. The cooks were very friendly and neat with their preparations.
After several minutes it was finally ready. It was time to dig in. It was served with some vegetable salad on the side. Due to the chili-pepper aroma I knew this food would be a bit spicy so I ordered for two bottles of water and a cold diet coke just in case things get to hot while eating this meal. I waited for my Chinese friend to take the first bite, and several other bites before I decided to take my first. Hui stopped and waited for me to at least try some. So I served myself from the Sichuan hot pot with some chopsticks (surprisingly, I knew how to use them for my first time). I decided to take some sliced meat and tofu from the Sich...
