Oedipus met his fate and fulfilled it long before the events in Oedipus The King (Oedipus Tyrannus) -- since that is the case, why has it been called "a tragedy of fate"?
Is humanity responsible for the decisions and choices they make? Is humanity in control of anything in this world or is it all fated? Well, today, the majority are not in control of their actions and decisions because of the advanced understanding of how the brain works. Advertising companies know how to influence people’s choices when it comes to the products they consume. Social media companies have also perfected the art of making people stay connected all the time. Many people believe they visit Facebook or WhatsApp or Twitter or Instagram a hundred times a day because they want to. However, the companies behind such decisions already knew people would visit their sites that many times. Humanity’s fate was already sealed and their decisions are but a reflection of the fate that was decided by these companies. With regard to Oedipus, the same thing happened. Oedipus believed that he was in control of his life and that he was escaping fate with every turn and choice he made. However, unknowingly, he was playing right into the hands of fate. His story is indeed a tragedy of fate because of the conflict or struggle between his destiny and his vain efforts. While seeking to explain his destiny as a tragedy of fate, this article will also showcase the eventual resignation to fate, and man’s impotence in the face of fate.
First of all, the tragedy of fate occurs through Oedipus’s parents, Laius and Jocasta. After the Oracle revealed their fate to them, Laius decided that the best decision not to fall victim to his fate was to avoid his wife Jocasta. However, one fateful night, he got drunk and all his efforts were deemed obsolete, and his actions fateful. Their union that night left Jocasta pregnant and thus began the story of Oedipus.
