The Historic Oregon Trail of Mid 1800s
Introduction
Oregon Trail is a route, approximately 2,000 miles from Independence Missouri to Oregon, used by pioneers to explore the West in the mid 1800s. It gained popularity with the discovery of gold nuggets in Sacramento valley in a period called “California gold rush”. It had primarily been used by fur trappers.
Independence Rock was a huge granite stone at the halfway point of the trail. Settlers aimed at reaching the rock by July 4 as it meant they were on schedule. Most took to carving their names on it and consequently renamed it; “Great register of the Desert”. The journey took 5-6 months meaning that preparation was equally long and involved selling of homes and possessions.
