Discussion Questions

Chapter 3:

1. What was the most striking or interest thing about Chuy’s story of crossing the border?

2. For undocumented workers, the most difficult task is managing the risks associated with their illegal status.  It requires “flying under the radar” at work and in the larger society.  How does “flying under the radar” manifest itself in the workplace?  Specifically how does it influence and impact employer/employee relations?

3. Is the stereotyped version of the “hard working Latino immigrant” a good thing or a bad thing for immigrants?

4. Comparatively speaking, do Mexican immigrants view working in the U.S. harder or easier than working in Mexico?  And what are the implications?

5. Your readings for this week and next week are from the book titled Labor and Legality.  It was published in 2011 and the author, Ruth Gomberg-Munoz states, “contradictory and confusing U.S. policy toward unauthorized immigration sends mixed signals to undocumented people.” She adds, “(the policy) leads many undocumented people to doubt the seriousness of anti-immigrant endeavors.” And she concludes with a quote from one of the Lions, Lalo, who says, “the United States is a very powerful country, if they really wanted to keep people out, they would do it.”

Obviously, things have changed since this book was published.  So the question is do you think the message is clear now?  Is it the right message? And do you think it will discourage people for crossing? And if you had the chance to ask Lalo about our current policy toward undocumented workers what do think he would say?

Summary and Discussion
Chuy began interacting with leather when he was twelve years old and by the time he graduated from high school, he could make belts and boots, which earned him to 100 dollars, which was good money as observed by his brothers and friends who were in Chicago. He never saw the reason for going to Chicago like the rest of the guys did as he was already earning from sewing leather. On Monday morning at around 7:30 am, his friend Mateo came and asked him that they move to the U.S. Surprisingly, Chuy did not disagree as he wanted to experience what the other guys felt being there in one year and come back. He went ahead to address his relocation to the U.S to his mother, who asked him, “You really want to go?” A question that seemed to be questioning his decision. Chuy replied by saying, “Yeah, I want to go.” The mother whispered a prayer and made a sign of a cross on his son’s head as a way of blessing him. On their first flight, Chuy and Mateo landed in Tijuana, where they proceeded to Mateo’s uncle. Mateo’s cousin linked them to coyotes (smugglers) who took them to Mexico. The coyotes bought them food and took them a group of other people who wanted to cross the border. Women, children, and older people were given priority to go first by the coyotes. Later in the evening, another car came for Chuy and the remaining group, which took them and were dropped at the border. The remaining distance was a walk through the sand being led by the coyotes who positioned themselves one in the front, one in the middle, and the other was at the back, erasing their footsteps. Unfortunately, an older man of around fifty years of age twists his uncle, and Mateo offers to lag with him as he could not walk as fast as the rest of the people. The walking journey took the whole night, about nine hours until the following day. On their way, they noticed border patrol approaching, and they had been instructed what to do by the coyotes. The border patrol came but failed to arrest the immigrants they caught instead went for Mateo and the injured guy. Chuy proceeded with the journey to Chicago, where he met his brother, who linked him to a busboy job.
While in the U.S, Chuy reflects the life in Leon, Mexico, that most families got funds from their relatives working abroad. Otherwise, life was hard in Mexico and that every member of the family had to help his brothers and sisters or give money to his parents. Luis further explains that money sent by lions was crucial for helping meet basic family needs. The unmarried lion had to sen...
