The pact is a memoir about three African America men, Sampson Davis, George Jenkins and Rameck Hunt who grew up on the streets of Newark at a time it was almost impossible for an African American to be successful in the United States. During this period poverty, high crime rates and drugs epidemic was the realities of everyday. There were hardly any successful people of African American decent living in the community such as doctors and lawyers with the town majorly inhabited by hustlers, thieves and drug addicts. The book highlights the promise the three boys made to each other to become doctors no matter what and against all the odds and temptations of the city. It notes the numerous challenges they faced in their long difficult journey to attain their dream. In addition, it shares the various factors that attributed to their success. These include mentors and role models they met along the way, emotional support they accorded each other, bond of friendship, inspiration, forgiveness, patience, hard work etc. The essay purports to analyze how the deep bond of friendship, mentors from University institutions and perseverance and determination characteristics helped Rameck Hunt to keep the promise and become a successful doctor.

Their friendship comes forth when they convince each other to make a pact to support and assist each other to become doctors despite the hand fate had dealt them. Sampson Davis states “I was the only one who had ever thought of becoming a doctor before that day. The truth is, none of us had seen anything to make us believe it was really possible” (Davis, Jenkins & Hunt, 2011). In addition, due to the absence of father figures in their lives they taught themselves basic stuff such as driving and how to treat women. Rameck was able to get motivation and support from his friends each other every step of the way to becoming a doctor. The journey was long and tough but his friends kept each him from giving up but st...
