Thomas Jefferson
Thomas Jefferson was the third president of the United States and he is remembered for authoring the Declaration of Independence. Jefferson played a leading role in the country’s early development. At the time of the American Revolutionary War, he served as the governor and legislature of Virginia. He was also one of the youngest figures to serve as a delegate to the Second Continental Congress. During his first term in office, Jefferson was successful in keeping his values as a Republican by stripping the powers of the presidency. He is also remembered for reducing government bureaucracy that existed before the country got its independence from the Britons and slashing the size of the army. Jefferson successfully reduced the national debt during his first two years as a president. Jefferson’s greatest accomplishment was the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 that doubled the size of the country. He purchased the land that stretched from the Missipi River up to the Rocky Mountains from the Napoleonic France for only $15 million. While he made great achievements during his first term in office, he became less productive in his second term, which easily won in 1804.
