Peat and Snow
The peat and the snow experiences draw on some very different experiences yet they also have some subtle similarities. These are wild environments that the author ventures into and they bring some subtle experiences that mimic the life in the past before civilization. What is more is that, they have a lasting impression on the author regardless of the fact that they are rudimentary.
To start with are the experiences that bring some element of similarities between the experiences that McFarlane had on the two environments and their varying terrains. The Snow presents the experiences that the author had on the chalk downs. The landscape as the author indicates is one that is formed of bare and continuous lines, with waves of dips and rises. However, what is most exhilarating is the experiences that the environment gives the author. Ideally, this is a terrain that give the experience of flying. There is a rush of excitement that is associated with the view of the birds flying, the undulating landscape and the unhindered scenery for miles as far as the eye can see. It gives the spirit a jolt of expressive in power that one can achieve anything given the power of freedom associated with the landscape. On the other hand, there is a similar experience when the author is travelling on the Peat while barefoot. Every surface that he steps on, translates into a memory. A memory that is so deeply engrained in the brain compared to when he walks on the surfaces with shoes on. It is exhilarating to experience the different surfaces underfoot as they all have a signature unique to their feel. When walking on grass, there is a soothing element compared to when walking on heat baked soils of freshly ploughed land...
