An Argumentative-Persuasive Essay Response to Malkin’s Essay

Essay Instructions:

View the short video below about how to write an argumentative essay. This video focuses on the essay introduction and the logic required in an essay’s structure. Enable volume.

Carefully review the text information about logical fallacies, pp. 323-329 in Chapter 17.

For some practical examples of how to spot logical fallacies, it will be worth your time to read Mike Rowe’s “Off the Wall: The Overarching Logical Fallacies.” Click here.

Read Michelle Malkin’s “Adult Baby Syndrome,” by clicking here.

Carefully read “A Word about the Thesis” by clicking here.

Using details in Ms. Malkin’s essay and your own thoughts and opinions, compose an argumentative-persuasive essay response to Malkin’s essay (400-word minimum, 500-word maximum) including an introductory paragraph, at least two supporting paragraphs, and concluding paragraph).

Specifically form your underlined thesis to consider the following statement by Ms. Malkin: “Adult Baby Syndrome isn’t an isolated pathology. It’s the new American Way. Or, I should say, the new American Wahhhhh.”

Also address Malkin’s contention that Junior “is a symptom of our Nanny State run amok, not an anomaly,” and the following examples provided by Malkin: the Michigan man who still collects food stamps after winning the lottery and the women who buy beer for their daughters’ prom parties.

POINT OF VIEW: Because of his adult baby syndrome, Stanley Thornton is drawing disability ($) from the government (You). Except for the thesis, write this essay from the first-person point of view of a hard-working American taxpayer. Remember, the government cannot give a dollar to one person without first taking that dollar from another person.

A Note about Point of View Language: The language in assignments that require writing from a particular point of view must conform to the “English Composition Checklist.” For example, a dirty rotten scoundrel would probably use some unsavory language filled with inappropriate expletives, but if you were writing from the point of view of a dirty rotten scoundrel, the voice must be that of a dirty rotten scoundrel, but the writing must be suitable for an English Composition classroom environment.

Include in your essay two short direct quotations, one from the Malkin article and one from the profile video that quotes little Stanley’s roommate Sandra Diaz, caregiver and former nurse.

Remember, a “direct” quotation includes quotation marks. A short quotation is fewer than five lines of text.

Agree or disagree with Malkin, but take a clear, logical stand on the issue. Identify this assignment as “Daily Writing 7.2.”

IMPORTANT: Daily Writing 7.2 must include an underlined thesis as the last sentence in the first paragraph of the essay. Before developing a thesis, click here to review “A Word about the Thesis” handout.

When forming your thesis, understand that a reliable opinion is always supported by facts.

To review the EH 1301 “Model Essay” handout in the Blackboard “Handouts and Course Documents” section for an example of an essay with an underlined thesis, click here.

ONE ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT: No in-text citation is required in the essay, but the last page (the page following the last paragraph of text) of Daily Writing 7.2 must include a Works Cited section that cites the article. No research is required for this assignment; however, the citation below must appear (in text, not an image) on that Work Cited page.

Pay special attention to the formatting and punctuation.

The title (Work Cited) is centered.

The first line of the citation begins at the left, one-inch margin.

The second and subsequent lines are indented one-half inch.

Also note the order and placement of each component of the citation.

No other source is needed, and no other citation shall be cited.

An Argumentative-Persuasive Essay Response to Malkin’s Essay
Current events and occurrences in American society are leaving question marks on the country’s moral fiber as we are only left with small tenets of ethical or moral code of behavior across the social divide. Politicians are no longer holding on to their oaths, the financial institutions are embezzling people’s funds through pyramid schemes, while cultural intolerance threatens to break the nation apart. It is without a doubt that the nation’s forefathers who fought under the banner of the land of the brave and freemen for the current freedoms and liberties are turning inside their graves from the look of things in the land for which they laid down their lives. Quoting Michelle Malkin’s words in Adult Baby Syndrome, the land of opportunities that guarantees success through hard work turns out to be “the land of freeloaders and the home of the depraved.” American society is slowly loosening its grip on morality or ethical code of conduct across the diverse social aspects, which leads to a lack of accountability and responsible behavior as witnessed in the current generation.
How can I be paying for the upkeep of a fully grown man, or man-child if you like, whose disability is lounging in king-sized crib and longing for coddling sessions with his parents? For how long will we come up with justifications for incompetency or irresponsible behavior in society under the guise of inclusivity? It’s outright unfair for a grown man to leave his place of work or employment and go back to his parents feigning an unheard syndrome for the sic...
