According to the theory, setting challenging specific goals and providing feedback for employees maximize their performance. Setting challenging specific goals results in improved output because employees understand clearly what needs to be done. Specific goals provide the employees with a sense of direction and consequently the feeling of accomplishment when they achieve the set goals. According to Robbins, Judge, Millett, & Boyle (2013), the specificity of the goals provides an internal stimulus for employees. When the goals are challenging, employees direct their efforts and focus on the tasks that lead to the accomplishment of the goals. Furthermore, they avoid distractions.
