Summary
The focus of the author in this write up is to clarify the underlying issues as far as the labor movement is concerned. Juravich pinpoints the circumstances which have prevailed over the past decades, referring mostly to the 21st Century, which has seen a drastic landscape shift in the manner employers are exploiting workers. Discussions are made on both traditional and contemporary approaches to solutions by labor movements are discussed as well.
The workers accustomed to the traditional way of having the unions intervene to their employers for solutions to their grievances must have union membership. Varying dynamics with severe implications have also led to the emergence of Alt-labor and the Fight for $15, a state referendum advocating for an increase in minimum wage per hour (Juravich, 2018). These upcoming demonstrations are exhausting other forms of power that Unions seem not to practice. It is still a struggle as employers are now diversifying their mode of hiring to avoid confrontations with these workers-advocacy organizations. Shifts in the labor market and the vanishing of nine to five jobs depict affected immigrant workers and low-income workers severely (Juravich, 2018).
The author tends to draw to our attention alternative ways to solving this crisis. He suggests the strengthening of unions and alt-labor together with the incorporation of structural and symbolic powers to fight the battle, hoping to retain social justice.
