Today, a lot of organizations view employee participation as a private issue. Organizations that encourage employee participation have a competitive advantage compared to others. Additionally, the invisible hands of the market will always push some organizations to adopt these policies. The participation of employees is much more than their contribution to decision making, collective bargaining or workplace consultation. In the case of employment issues, there are different views on the intervention of the government since everything depends on the goals of the employment, these different views are captured on four models of employment. These models include the unitarist model, the egoist model, the pluralist model, and critical employment relationships. Different theorists like Karl Max, Adam Smith, and Frederick Taylor had different views on employee participation. The purpose of this assignment is to examine the views of different theorists like Adam Smith, Frederick Taylor, and Karl Marx under the pluralist model.
The Pluralist Model
The Pluralist model of employment relationship exhibits the political theory whereby politics and decisions are found in the framework of the government although a lot of non-governmental groups normally use their resources to exert influence.
1 Adam Smith
According to Adam Smith, balance is very important. The system of Adam Smith was against inequality. According to Adam Smith, nations could be able to maximize wealth if there is equality. The division of labor also increases productivity. However, the government should take charge of the division of labor because it can lead to corruption. The employment relationship is normally viewed as a bargaining problem between stakeholders who are taking part in the same interests. The results of employment depend on the distribution of resources and the laws that are governing the employees and employers. In this case labor unions, dispute resolution policies, and public policies are very important. Adam Smith asserts that balance is very important in the pluralist theory and that is why measures should be taken to ensure there is equality.
2 Frederick Taylor
According to Taylor, trade unions and government policies like minimum wage laws are beneficial to the employees because they prohibit unequal bargaining between employees and the employers. Frederick Taylor believes that labor is a sense of free productive activity in the spirit of human life. Additionally, Taylor asserts that ascertaining the best way of completing a job can be seen as a pursuit of great efficiency and profitability. The reduction of employee benefits and moving production to low-wage nations can also be done in pursuit of efficiency and profitability for the advantage of the stakeholders.
3 Karl Marx
