Shonda Rhimes is the youngest of six siblings and the eldest sister is Twelve years older and there are four other brothers and sister (Rhimes 2). The producer and writer studied English and film studies at Dartmouth College andthen attained an MFA from the University of Southern California's School where she focused on screenwriting.The writer grew up in a family that valued hard work and education and in high school she got a job scooping ice cream at the
Baskin-Robbins (22). According to Rhimes (197) “My father used to tell us, “The only obstacle to your success is your own imagination.” He said it so much that I hear his voice sometimes in my sleep”. Nonetheless, her parents and siblings did not understand her work and are surprised that some people think she is interesting (Rhimes 4-5).Just at the writer tackled her fears and personal challenges, she would be more willing to listen to others, mostly experts on how best to tackle the Corona Virus pandemic.
Working at Baskin-Robbins allowed Rhimes to appreciate the importance of responsibility where she decided to earn minimum wage to buy a denim miniskirt she wanted, but which her mother did not like. Rhimes learned that minim wage does no go far and while it was clumsy scooping the ice cream since she was short at least learned. In Scoop Dreams, Rhimes writes that scooping ice cream wasthe first real job she had done partly to defy her mother and make her own decision whether to buy a denim mini. In the book, Shonda Rhimes emphasizes that her year of saying “yes” to everything helped her changed her perspective making easier to prioritize life and work, but this was not always the case as she at times has felt inadequate and doubtful of her accomplishments. Making small changes and listening to different voices supports self-improvement as Rhimes focused more on leveraging her strengths without ignoring the input of others
