Reading through the chapters, it is clear that McCandless is a risk taker and one with an appetite for adrenaline activities. It is quite interesting to note that when he goes out looking to experience the wild, he does not have much. As such, it is a risky affair and one that is riddled with all manner aspects that could go long (Krakauer, n.d.). Other than the fact that he walks for miles before he can finally get the lift that he was hoping for, he also goes out into the wild with little preparation. The main preparation being the fact that he had spent some time in the library researching about plants that are edible out in the wild. He purchases a rifle and ammunition and heads out into the wild. He takes on a rather bizarre approach to getting daily life to be alone in the wild (Krakauer, n.d.). It is a dream that he always had and one that he achieves. It is quite interesting to note that when he starts off, he does not have a lot of experience and in fact takes on a rather apprentice approach to the entire trip. He had now talked or been with his parents for some years and here he was in the middle of nowhere seeking a thrill from being alone in the wilderness. A place where he has never been to and doing things that he had never done before such as hunting in the wild and fetching for own food.
