Social Comment and Personal Feeling in the Poem "Spring Scene"

Du Fu’s famous poem which is entitled “Spring Scene” is popular due to its intrinsic quality of being able to impart a strong emotion together with a societal or social context. Through the arrangement of words, the thought is made available to the reader in a poetic manner. The message is deeply ingrained in the chosen words, and each word is a symbolism to something even more profound. The chosen words used in the poem “Spring scene” are metaphors to the author’s personal feeling and his experience in the social context. By utilizing both elements, the author was successful in sharing a visual image t coupled with deep emotion. The imagery of the poem was achieved through the use of descriptive words that give light to the current situation of the environment, and then the situation of the social context was given meaning through the use of touching situations that is general to the event of war. “Spring Scene” opens the poem through the use of the words “A kingdom smashed”, referencing a state of stability, order and community being destroyed and delved into chaos. As with the title which is focused in the mood of spring, rather than looking at tranquility of nature, this Spring is troubled by the madness of this human act. However, in the poem, we also see a line which is juxtaposed with “a kingdom smashed” which is the line “plants and trees grow deep” which is the symbolism of nature’s endurance and its permanence amidst the petty affairs of humanity. Through this, Social commentary and personal emotion are present in the poem making it relatable and touching.
