The rich are getting richer and continue to increase their incomes as the poor continue to languish in poverty. An article by Robert Frank reports that the richest 1% of the world own “half the world’s wealth.” This is an astonishing revelation as it shows how people want to create for themselves and amass as much power as they can and while they still can. In such societies, there is always a ruling class that develops, and in the Feed and the Hunger Games, a ruling class exists. In the Feed, every person needs to have a feed installed in them after they are born. Well, this is not mandatory, but it sets one apart in that it gifts them the chance to live a life that is free of certain problems. However, as it is even in today’s society, nothing comes free, and everything is not as it seems. The feed are used to collect information from the people, which is then used to profile them. The society in the Feed is shaped like today’s where only a few people get to benefit while others (in their millions or billions) struggle. The Hunger Games is not any different. The consumeristic model that appears in the Feed is also well depicted in the Hunger Games. Here, there is the central authority which keeps track of everyone and selects a few people from the districts to compete in a game of death. In the game, whoever wins earns their district benefits, but this comes at a price of killing other people. The people in both the Feed and the Hunger Games are kept in a cycle of poverty and thus forced to depend on and follow every rule designed for them. In the end, the rich continue to get richer as the poor continue to languish in poverty. One similarity in these two pieces is the fact that it is only a few people who control entire societies. These few individuals have eroded all sense of humanity in them and thus do not seem to care about anything or anyone but themselves. In the Hunger Games, for example, people are selected from all the districts and are made to fight each other to the death. The people who designed the game find pleasure in watching people play the games and killing each other as they look to survive. The rules indicate that only one person gets to live the Hunger Games, and this means one has to kill all the other contestants. In the Feed, every family is expected to install the feed on their children immediately they are born. However, this is not a must, but if not installed, discrimination becomes one’s portion.
