HOW TO WRITE A “SUMMARY” AND “REFLECTION”

I.  SUMMARY of KEY CONCEPTS (Highlighting what you feel are the most important ideas in the reading or video)

v  A summary discusses key concepts contained in the reading.  Basically, you want to summarize the 5-Ws:  Who? What? Where? When? and Why?

v  Your notes (“summary”) should be complete, yet concise.

v  You should limit your summary to roughly one side of writing (half a page of typing)

v  Remember, the purpose of the summary is discuss the author’s TAP (Task=The topic of the reading; Audience=Who was the reading written for; Purpose=Why did the author write the reading.)

II.  REFLECTION (The reflection assignment asks:  What did you think?)

v  In your reflection, you should tell me what you learned from the reading or video.

v  Some questions that you might answer are:

  1. I really agree/disagree because…
  2. This reminds me of …
  3. A question I have…
  4. I could see myself using this knowledge in my classroom or in an interaction with others in this way…
  5. I didn’t understand… OR:  Now I understand…
  6. After this reading I will change…
  7. I feel…

III.  NOTE

It must be clear to me that upon reading your Summary and Reflection that you indeed have read all of the assigned reading or viewed the video.  You may offer your own thoughts on the material, including areas with which you particularly relate or disagree as an ‘informed’ opinion.  The Reflection is where you may include any question you have related to the material (but do not feel that you must include a question when you have none.)  Digging deep into the reading or video content with reflective critical thinking and writing will increase your learning and is encouraged.

To read without reflecting is like eating without digesting.  Edmund Burke

In "Happy Maps," Daniele Quercia talks about the value of living outside the digital world. He does this by giving an example of his experience living in Boston. While studying for his PhD in London, Quercia's focus was on efficiency. After completing his doctorate program, he moved to Boston. He decided to buy a bicycle, which he would ride across the shortest route provided on digital maps when going to work. However, one day, he decided to take another way and discovered that it had beautiful surroundings and little to no cars despite it being longer. After this experience, Quercia joined a team at Yahoo where they developed alternatives in digital maps that allow one to take the happy, quiet, beautiful, or shortest route.
Quercia's talk makes me rethink how I live my life. Most of the time, I am focused on living effectively. Based on Quercia's address, I can now see that this has kept me from experiencing beautiful and happy things in life. But Quercia's talk does not just reveal the demerits of efficiency. It also demonstrates how we as humans have allowed technology to take over our social lives. Today, most people do not value the importance of daily human interaction because they are often engrossed in their mobile phones, laptops, and other computer screens. We seek happiness and satisfaction on the internet, yet they are available in the physic...
