Client’s Description of the Situation
Brown has worked in a combat unit in Afghanistan. He is experiencing nightmares due to traumatic events he must have encountered during his time in the military. Brown said that “Sometimes, it’s like I am back in Afghanistan. I have nightmares that are so real I am afraid to go back to sleep.” Brown is combining sleeping pills, antidepressants, and beer to get enough sleep. He is afraid of losing his job and becoming homeless since his employer has found him sleeping while at work several times and has been warned. Brown wants help to lead a stable and healthy life.
Client’s Needs
As a substance abuse counselor, I think Brown needs therapy to avoid sleeping pills, antidepressants, and alcohol. He says that “Sometimes, I combine prescription sleeping pills and my antidepressant with beer just to get a little sleep. I know it’s dangerous.” In my perspective, Brown misuses drugs to get sleep and avoid nightmares. Since the client understands that it is dangerous to combine prescription drugs with alcohol, we will work out a way to ensure that Brown overcomes his nightmares. Additionally, Brown needs financial assistance to keep his apartment and avoid living with his parents since he does not like it. He also needs assistance from support groups to set his goals and achieve them so that he can lead a stable and productive life.
Client’s Strengths
Brown has numerous strengths that can be incorporated with a good treatment plan. First, he knows that he has a problem that should be addressed, which explains why he found the community-based agency. Brown knows that he should be responsible for his life and that he needs to make progress in the right direction. The person admitted to combining beer with prescription drugs, which shows that he wants to change. Brown is yearning to have a life of his own, which is why he does not want to live with his parents. Moreover, Brown understands the importance of education, and that is why he wants to return to school to study and get a career. Overall, Brown is determined to become a better person and lead a stable and productive life.
