Genre Analysis Project Assignment description: The purpose of this assignment is for you to practice analyzing a genre that is unfamiliar to you. You should analyze the genre using steps outlined in the Conducting Genre Analysis handout. You may analyze any genre that you expect to write in the future, either in your courses or job. Below are some genres students have analyzed in the past (you are not restricted to the below genre and may choose other genres, but your choice must be approved by me): • lab reports • job cover letters + resume (must find examples from your discipline; must have 3 cover letters and 3 resumes to analyze) • statement of purpose (for graduate school application) • artist statements • artist portfolio • report of teaching observations (for education major courses) • software design specification (for computer science work) • annual company report (for accounting work) • newspaper editorials (for journalism work) • restaurant reviews (for journalism work) • GRE essay • restaurant menus • or anything else that you can think of and get approved by me • Not: twitter accounts, Instagram accounts, memes, abstracts Your essay should describe your findings, particularly from your observations in steps 2, 4, and 5 of the handout. It should include an appendix of the writing samples you analyzed. In your essay, focus on explaining your findings (conclusions about how the genre should be written and why) in an organized manner and supporting findings with evidence drawn from the samples. Your evidence can be example phrases from your sample texts or references to the sample texts (e.g, “Sample 1”). Do not simply state the data (the textual features) without explaining the point you are trying to make about how the genre should be written. Your essay should also include a list of references if you consult websites to answer step 2 of Conducting Genre Analysis and if you found your sample texts from websites. The genre that I have analyzed in this project is the Restaurant Menus. In all small or big restaurants, menus are shown to the guests with an aim to help them decide what they should eat. A menu is actually a list of beverages and foods offered to the customers. This list also contains the price of every food item. For example, if I want to have hot and sour soup, then I first have to decide whether a full bowl is needed or a half bowl. Depending on my selection, the price of the food can be found on the menu. A restaurant menu can be a la carte, which is a list of foods other customers like the most. It can also be a table d'hôte, which is a pre-established sequence of courses provided at the restaurant.
Restaurant menus come in printed forms or are displayed in the form of a board or large poster (Namba, et al. 2013). I have personally seen that in most restaurants, menus are presented to the customers in printed forms. Separate paper sheets are provided to everyone so that they can decide whether they want to order individually or along with their families or friends. The trend of presenting menus in digital form is also gaining popularity. Since the 1990s, many restaurants of the United States, Europe, Canada, and China have been providing their customers with the facility of checking their menus via their smartphone screens. For this purpose, they are required to download, install and activate restaurant apps. Once these applications are fully activated, they start showing what is available at the restaurants on a given day.
In the 19th and 20th centuries, printed menus were used both in restaurants and homes. I have heard many stories from my forefathers that they used to present printed menus to their guests to help them decide what they would like to eat (Kresic, 2017). I wonder why this facility or offer is no longer available. These days, when we go to a relative or friend’s house, we are not given any menu or the choice of enjoying our favorite food. The host decides the menu themselves and then the food is presented to the guest in an hour or two.
