The class lessons have taught me that style is one of the most important aspects of writing. Style determines how writers pass their messages across to the readers. It describes their word choices, why they structure their sentences the way they do, and how they use figurative languages. Pieces of writing performed without paying attention to style can be boring. Moreover, the credibility of an author can be in question if they do not appear to be using appropriate styles in their writing. The style that the author used was interesting. He combined simplicity and clarity with details while adding humor to his work. It can be said to be having all the ingredients of good writing.
I believe that the author was very thoughtful in his style choices. The writer tried to appeal to the emotions of the readers in a manner that made it simple for them to understand. The style that stood out for me was using short sentences that are easy to understand and make sense of. It is a style that grasps the attention of attention of the reader because they never lose track of where the conversation is going. I will be examining how the author uses different styles to communicate to the readers and appeal to their senses. Class lessons we have engaged in have emphasized on the importance of style in literature. As a result, I want to examine the grammar and vocabulary used so that I can know how style influences literature. Style is important, but it is good to remember that there are many things that make it up. It is therefore important to know what makes styles successful.
Style in George Orwell’s 1984
There has been a constant debate on the choice of the title of the book “1984”. One question that would go into the mind of a reader is: “why not 1980 or any other year?” It is instances like that that make Orwell stand out for his use of imagery to determine his style. The work is characterized by the use of certain writing styles that enhance themes and imagery.
The plot of the story looks relatively simple on the surface. It tells the story of how Winston survived in Oceania in 1984 where he was frustrated sexually. Winston is also oppressed psychologically by the party. Because of his frustrations, he starts writing a journal to air his opinions against the party. The story is told from the point of view of Winston; it is his story and the technique used is “third person omniscient narrative”. It enables readers to share in his struggles and frustrations about the party. Orwell’s writings were made of short sentences and they were simple to enable readers to understand the message he was trying to send. For example, the author notes on page 280:
Something crashed on to the bed behind Winston’s back. The head of a ladder had been thrust through the window and had burst in the frame. Someone was climbing through the window....
