Summary of the Major Elements of the Article
This paper encloses a critical analysis of a quantitative research study titled as “Recognition of faces and Greebles in 3-month-old infants: Influence of temperament and cognitive abilities”. This article has been composed by Spangler and his colleagues and was published in the year 2011. The title of this article is considered to be attractive as well as provoking for the readers as it evidently analyses the study subject. Along these lines, the article addresses the cognitive development area that fundamentally emphasizes on the intelligence of the infant. In addition, it investigates the capability of an infant to differentiate between diverse visual stimuli, i.e. a face from a different and its ethnicity. The fundamental research question that this article sought to answer is “Does a 3-month-old infant has the capability of distinguishing between 3 separate stimulus classes”? Moreover, the article chiefly incorporates two hypotheses that are centered on whether or not temperament or the cognitive capability influences the recognition of an infant with an unfamiliar or familiar influence.
Summary of research design and findings
In this particular article, the researchers adopted a cross-sectional quantitative research design. The participants in this research were 70 Caucasian (35 females and 35 males) infants belonging to the middle to upper-class backgrounds. These infants illustrated same three pairs of all the stimuli groups or case in a two three quarter and frontal views. The study employed a standard dishabituation/habituation paradigm with “Toddler Development II” along with “Bayley Scales of Infant”. Such measures were undertaken on two separate days. Before the initiation of the research an infant behaviour questionnaire has been utilized in order to rank as well as determine the temperament of infants. Even though the researchers carefully elaborated on the techniques being utilized, two fundamental things that were not clearly incorporated were all infants who did not complete the temperament assessment, and the order of dishabituation/ habituation paradigm administration was diverse among infants.The participants for this particular research have been selected by means of random sampling technique from a large population presenting insights into the topic being researched.
