The effective use of medicines advocates that patients should receive medications that match their medical needs, for adequate time at suitable costs for them and their society. However, the illogical use of medicines has been a significant challenge in healthcare across the globe. Approximately, over 45% of all drugs are prescribed, distributed and traded inappropriately as well as 50% of all patients fail to observe medicine prescriptions (Finley et al., 2017). Typically, the excessive use, underuse and misuse medicines have significantly led to the wastages healthcare scarce resources and widespread health hazards (Jheeta & Franklin, 2017). Some examples of abuse of drugs include inadequate dosages, poly-pharmacy and use of injections where syrups can be more appropriate. Currently, electronic prescribing has been on the rise in the healthcare industry to improve the patient safety and quality of prescribing procedure (Porterfield et al., 2014). Electronic prescribing is considered to be more beneficial as it is more secure, offer more patient safety, enhances the pharmacy workflow, offers enhanced patient medication adherence and allow for additional patient support services.
My time at an adult family Doctor office, I enjoyed working with my preceptor as well as other staff members. At this practicum, I learnt more on proficiency, prioritizing diagnosis, prescribing medications as well as knowledge on how to act on different medical situations on general patients. I believe going through this practicum helped me gain confidence as well as experience on the work I do. Moreover, I believe through the lessons learnt from this practicum, I am better prepared to work even in a challenging work environment. Initially, I never expected that the experience from the internship would influence my future aspirations. I assumed I would execute my daily tasks and more likely mention the practicum experience in a job interview. Nevertheless, working in such a positive work environment, I have realized that working family doctor setting will be a good fit for me. Although I still need to explore more choices, I am proud of the fact that I can directly impact people’s lives and also find purpose in life.
