Lena Younger is a great and hard-working mother who supports her family whatever happens. Her family is not rich and has a lot of financial problems. As black people living in the white world, they have been subjected to oppression and discrimination but that does not take away her love and care for her family and her children. In one instance, she has admitted to Ruth that her children frighten her. But that does not get in her way of providing nurture and support whenever she can give them. Her relationship with her children are not that close, but she struggles to connect with both Beneatha and Walter. Lena Younger’s American dream is simple. She simply wants stability and comfort for her family so that they can flourish and live a life not in poverty.
Walter Younger
Walter Younger is a young man that is portrayed as a jerk. He is obsessed with money and he is jealous of rich white men. Subconsciously, he is indoctrinated to chase value in the form of money, luxury, and power. He works as a chauffer for a rich white man, and he hates his job. He wants to rise above in society, and so, when he hears the news that his family is going to receive 10,000 dollars from his father’s insurance, (his father died), he is ecstatic about the opportunity of becoming rich. He plans to establish a liquor store with his friend, which eventually is not established because his partner ran away with all the money.
