After the completion of each module, complete a written assignment engaging with the concepts in the module and examining the connections and intersections of ideas. The reflective reading assignment is an exercise in critical reading and analytical thought. You are expected to identify and apply some of the critical tools from your readings and the lectures to any interesting elements from the course texts and respond with analytical arguments about the ideas in those texts in relation to how you understand cultural production.
In simpler terms, you are expected to take some set ideas (2 or 3, preferably related) from the readings or lectures that struck you – concept, theories, images – examine them from a critical perspective and apply them to some cultural text (either from course or from outside the course) to demonstrate that you understand the concepts and how to deploy them.
In the second and third modules, please make an effort to connect the ideas in the current module with the concepts in the previous module(s) as part of that critical engagement.
Some questions to help start the process might be as follows:
1. What are the elements of each idea that make it striking to you?
2. What are the most significant aspects of each and why?
3. How else could it be understood and why?
4. What is it about the context of production and reception that generates your interest?
5. What cultural and historical factors do you see at play?
6. How do the concepts give you insight into some other cultural product?
You don’t have to answer all of these questions one by one, they are just prompts to get you on track to developing an analytical reflective argument.

Idea: Message
'The Medium is the Message by Marshall McLuhan is one interesting reading that has an essential idea of what a message is. The writer says that the medium is the message meaning that what is carried in the news is essential. A message can travel in different means, but its purpose becomes impactful. McLuhan wants to show that a message must not be replied to, but what it does has a lot of impact on society (McLuhan, 1964). The author gives various examples of how the message is passed and how it gets to impact society. In turn, the news leads to cultural production that passes forms, practices, and values to society.
McLuhan has given an excellent example of how technology has become an essential medium in which various messages have been passed. Through technology, there have been developments of the electric bulb, improvements in writing, and the railway line through its development (McLuhan, 1964). Looking at technology, it has been a powerful medium where the vital message has been passed that has had immense improvements in the way humans live their life. It is with no doubt that technology has been able to impact all areas that concern human-like in the transport industry, construction, and the way communication is done.
The electric bulb is one message that has been passed through technology. In turn, lighting that comes from the lamp is being used in many aspects of life, from domestic homes where rooms are powered to industries where the electric bulb illuminates products on shelves, to hospitals where the light is used during surgery (McLuhan, 1964). Besides, interestingly, the electric bulb is used in agribusiness, where it is used in providing warmth to hatched chicks at the brooder. The message that the electric bulb gives is essential as it has been able to pass values critical to society. Critical points are moved to society, such as the importance of taking something small in a compelling manner that...
