Comparison of "To be In Love" and "Love song: I and Thou"

Essay Instructions:

Part One:

Using two texts in the same genre (two songs, poems, speeches, or commercials) about the same topic (love, for example, or the apocalypse, or the economy, or breakfast cereals), in a sentence or so explain what your text is about. The songs, for example, might be about love. The poems might be about the end of the world (to use the example from class). The speeches might be about the economy. The commercials might be about SUVs, or coffee, or breakfast cereal.

Then, in the same paragraph, compare and contrast the texts: how does each talk about love, or the economy, etc.? What are the significant similarities and differences? (This cannot be an exhaustive list, since you are limited to about a page for Parts One and Two. So choose your comparisons wisely.)

Part Two:

Using the same theme (say, the economy), describe in a paragraph what the economy (for example) is not like in 2-3 sentences. Then, say what it is like. You’ll be using similes and metaphors here. Something like, The economy is not a children’s puzzle that can be solved in a few minutes. It’s not an imaginary number floating far above the heads of the nation. It’s like a corn maze: it doesn’t look intimidating until you are trying to find your way out of it.

Part Three:

What are the benefits and shortcomings of comparison and contrast? When is it useful? For example, did comparing your topic to other things through metaphors and similes help explain the thing itself? What are some potential dangers?

Grammar/Style: In your essay, highlight in bold one example of each of the following literary techniques:

  1. Alliteration: We didn’t cover this too well last week, so here’s another shot at it. I’ll spend more time in class explaining how you alliterate only those words you want to emphasize.
  2. One example of any of the following techniques:
    1. Em dashes
    2. Colons
    3. Parallelism
    4. Repetition

Part 1
In “Love song: I and Thou" Alan Dugan likens his relationship with his house as an unstable structure. Dugan writes, ‘nothing is plumb, level, or square’ (line1). The poet also expresses his disappointment, his failure to love unconditionally as he would have wished. To be In Love" by Gwendolyn Brooks explores how the poet feels while in love; as well as regret for not showing love. Both poems focus on the uncertainties of love, where the speaker in Gwendolyn’s life is afraid of losing her lover. On the other hand, the speaker in Dugan’s poem expresses his love as though it were sacrifice, using the symbol of the house.
The two poems rely on different styles and Love song: I and Thou, uses an exasperated tone and the symbolism of building a house with a relationship where the speaker is aware that his life is falling apart like a house in disrepair. On the contrary, the poem, “To be In Love” Gwendolyn Brooks uses a romantic tone alluding that one has to touch, see and feel the love. This is highlighted when Brooks writes, “To touch, to whisper on, “(line 26). Brooks emphasizes pain and suffering in love, but mostly joyous moments and a sense of adventure (Kent, 1990). Dugan is more reflective as he focuses on himself and his contribution, to struggling with love, but Brooks highlights how the lover sees her. Dugan has effectively used the metaphor of the built house, in detailing his feelings on love. Similarly, Brooks also uses metaphors to her love, ‘Your arms are water’ (line 14).
Part 2
Love is not a one step process that one can quickly get in and about, but rather a journey. Love is not selfish and even as people expect that others love them back it is a mutual feeling. Love is not tau...
