Sex without love poem by Sharon Olds
“Sex without love”, a poem written by Sharon Olds published in 1984. People in a loveless relationship do not have warm and close relations as they each have their selfish reasons for staying together. Even as they make love they focus on their performance just like ice skaters and dancers. “Beautiful as dancers/ gliding over each other like ice-skaters” (“Olds” 2-3). This illustrates even when there is direct physical contact there is no meaningful interaction just like dancers who are merely partnered but are not a couple. Lovers in a loveless relationship are close and apart simultaneously interested in pleasure and less likely to compromise, and Olds states Olds states, “faces red as steak, wine” (6)

To further highlight that loveless love is possible Olds alluded to purist religious people who derive enlightenment and faith for their belief in God and not the religious figures. Olds states, “These are the true religious/ the purists, the pros, the ones who will not/ accept a false Messiah.” (13-15). However, the selfish lovers merely seek pleasure as though they are runners. “Priest instead of the God. They do not/ mistake the lover for their pleasure/ they are like great runner” (“Olds”16-18). This indicates that the lovers do not affirmation from their lovers, but they seek pleasure on their own, and this approach benefits them as they do not require to compromise as they pursue what they need to fulfill their desires.
