Alcoholism is one of the leading problems in the world today. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) alcohol drinking is common among young adults aged between 18-24yrs (Alcohol Org 2018). The same research also implies that alcoholism is common among male as compared to females. In the United States, over 14 million people are regular alcoholics which translates to one person in every thirteen people. In the entire country, more than 7% of the people aged 18 and above drink alcohol. Out of this figure, 8.1 million are alcoholics. In addition, over 3 million teenagers of age between 14 to 17 have an alcohol problem. Unlike adults who start drinking at the age of 21, youths who start using alcohol at the age of 15 are twice more likely to become alcoholics and four times likely to depend on alcohol for survival (Lizmarie n.d). Alcoholism has several problems to the youths which include social, financial, and health. Social problems include alcohol related fights and domestic violence. Financial problems include the expenses used in buying the drinks especially when one is addicted. Health problems on the other hand include addiction, withdrawal, alcohol poisoning, among others. Notably, for a better future, the government and the society at large should fight this problem in its entirety before the country loses an entire generation into alcoholism.
Causes of Alcoholism
One of the main cause of alcoholism is the peer influence. It is estimated that about fifty percent of the youth who involve in alcoholism are encouraged to do so by friends. Peer influence may include factors such as direct offers from friends for example in parties.
