Writing a Poem Explication
An explication gives your thoughts on the poem in general.
Parts of an explication include:
Mood, or atmosphere, is the feeling created in the reader by a literary work or passage. The mood can be described in a single word, such as lighthearted, frightening, or despairing.
Plot is the sequence of events in a literary work. In most novels, dramas, short stories, and narrative poems, the plot involves both characters and a central conflict.
Dialogue – In short stories and plays, dialogue helps the reader understand the overall nature of the poem. (Not all poems will contain dialogue.)
The essay should contain:
Your essay should have an introductory paragraph that identifies the title, author, and a descriptive word or two about the poem.
Use the three parts above to write 1 – 3 (middle of the essay) paragraphs explaining the mood, plot, and dialogue (if any) in the poem.
End with a concluding paragraph that briefly summarizes your ideas from the previous paragraphs.
