As the world battles COvid-19, people have turned to whatever tools available to assist in the fight. Some have lauded artificial intelligence (AI) as a powerful weapon in the fight. They see AI as a powerful tool that can be applied to bring hope in the wake of the epidemic. However, other individuals have remained skeptical regarding the claims that AI has a major role to play in solving the problem. While AI can be critical in the fight against Covid-19, it will play a marginal role.
An article by Julian Cardillo titled, “How artificial intelligence is helping scientists find a coronavirus treatment” chronicles the efforts of Professor James Pustejovsky as he leads a professor team in making use of AI to fight Covid-19. Pustejovsky, a computer science, and linguistics professor are working towards developing a platform called Semantic Visualization of Scientific Data (SemViz). The project has been motivated by the increasing number of publications on Covid-19, which now are more than 50,000. The platform seeks to interpret the thousands of research articles on the epidemic and present results that are easily accessible for analysis and interpretation. The project is critical considering the challenge brought about by the explosion of information on the topic.
