Pathophysiology: Emotional abuse damages the emotional wellbeing of an individual and their self-esteem. It usually includes emotional assault, such as berating and belittling children, as well as isolating or ignoring the children. People who have been emotionally abused usually worry about how others perceive them. The wounds of emotionally abused people are usually hidden because they involve the psychological processes (Zil-E-Ali et al., 2018).
Epidemiology: The prevalence of rates of emotional abuse is reported to be 80%, with 40% being female. In the United States, more than 4.1 million abuse reports are received each year. The widespread of emotional abuse is attributed to many factors such as poor parenting, sexual abuse, and neglect from parents (Jud, Fegert, & Finkelhor, 2016).
Physical Exam Findings: During the examination, emotionally abused individuals show signs of withdrawal from friends. There are also changes in behavior, exhibiting anger, aggression, hostility, and hyperactivity. There may also be changes in performance, with emotional problems such as depression, anxiety, and poor self-esteem.
