According to the article, businesses around the world are under immense pressure. Globalization has opened the world into a global village where organizations can operate without any restrictions. As such, local businesses continue to face increased competition that warrants them to make transformations to their operations. While in the past leaders of these organizations would make little adjustments such as restructuring, decluttering and delayering to turn their fortunes around, these measures are no longer applicable (Prahalad & Hamel, 1990). For instance, it was quite common to find companies that had issues with communication reducing the number of managers and encouraging more delegation to empower and motivate their employees. However, the above initiative often results in disruptions that in the current competitive environment can prove costly.
Based on the sentiments shared above, I strongly believe that it is imperative that organizations not only identify and cultivate but also exploit their core competencies which will guarantee them immense growth and development. Core competencies in simple terms relate to an organization’s resources and capabilities that make up its strategic advantages. The logic behind the idea of core competencies is to facilitate businesses to be unique. Managers in these organizations that are keen on success therefore must purport to invent new markets and whenever possible enter emerging markets. The initiative will significantly assist the organizations to shift patterns of customer choice in established markets.
