Annotated Bibliography Assignment Instructions
Now that you have had some practice summarizing both sources you read in Week 5 and creating proper APA citations, it is time to select the topic you would like to guide the focus of your Expository Essay, consult an additional source, and build an Annotated Bibliography. For this assignment, you will begin building an Annotated Bibliography, which you will learn about in the Realizeit Module 6.
What is an Annotated Bibliography?
An Annotated Bibliography is a list of references to books, articles, and documents that you are using as sources for your paper. Each reference is followed by the ‘annotation,’ which contains two paragraphs: a brief source summary paragraph and a response/evaluative paragraph.
What are the purposes of the annotated bibliography?
To format your sources into a full APA reference (this will later make up the References page of your essay).
To help you understand your sources and to demonstrate this understanding through summary.
To evaluate the credibility and usefulness of the source you are using.
How to Begin:
Read an additional source depending on the topic you have chosen.
If you choose to write about social media, your second article is: "Benefits and Costs of Social Media in Adolescence," (Links to an external site.) by Yalda T. Uhls, Nicole B. Ellison, and Kaveri Subrahmanyam
If you choose to write about the marriage trend, your second article is: "Middle Class Marriage is Declining, and Likely Deepening Inequality," (Links to an external site.) by Richard Reeves and Christopher Pulliam
Next, annotate (take notes, highlight, underline, pose questions, respond to) the two sources. Your goal is to ensure you understand the main points of both sources.
Then, write the full APA reference for both sources using the APA Resources - 7th Edition module and begin writing your annotations.
How to Annotate:
Write two paragraphs, one summary paragraph and one evaluation paragraph, for each source. The information included should be as follows:
Source 1: Paragraph 1: Summarize your source. What topic is being covered? What is the point of the article? If a friend asked you to describe the article, what would you say? Remember - summaries are objective, meaning they do not share your point of view.
Source 1: Paragraph 2: Reflect on the article. Is the author credible? Why or why not? How can you use this source in your essay? Has it changed your perspective on your issue? You will learn more about assessing source credibility in RealizeIt Module 6.
