Introduction
Family development as a filed is quite expansive. With the focus being solely on the family as a basic unit of socialization, the field looks at how the family morphs or adjusts through time. This, in turn, helps to identify the causes, impacts as well as any distinct pattern that emerges from the changes over time. The overall consequence is its contribution to medical research and understanding of individual aspects, to efficiently administer various modes of treatments or therapies depending on the diagnosis. While it has been there for a while, family development is still a ripe area of further research or study. The essence of this paper is to provide a brief analysis of an article in the field of family development, with the aim of acquainting oneself to the same. The article of interest, in this case, is Ethnic Differences in Returning Home: Explanations from a Life Course Perspective by Tom Kleinepier, Ann Berrington, and Lenny Stoeldraijer.
Ethnic Differences in Returning Home
There exist some variations when it comes to how individuals from various backgrounds adjust to changes in their environments. This even more pronounced when it comes to young adults in the U.S.A and Europe. Various reasons might be brought forth to explain this, although the most basic one connects it to economic uncertainty. This article explains how people can learn about different cultural norms concerning intergenerational co-residence and variations in transitions such as partnership transitions and employment using ethnic differences in leaving as well as returning home.
The study showed that Moroccans, Turks, Antilleans, and Surinamese (second‐generation groups) had a higher likelihood of returning home after leaving than the native Dutch (Kleinepier, Berrington, & Stoeldraijer, 2017). Both categories of people left home between 16-28 years of age and between 1999 and 2011, but the study illustrates a big difference between the natives and the groups of immigrants who left their parental homes for one reason or the other.
Kleinepier, Berrington, & Stoeldraijer (2017) explain that the differences in how the groups returned home were largely influenced by timing as well as the occurrence of other major events in their life course.
