The pilgrimage commenced at an inn located in London whereby a group of travelers had assembled in readiness for their voyage to go to the St. Thomas Becket shrine in Canterbury. The storyteller of the tales during the pilgrimage identified as Chaucer meets the pilgrims at the tavern and forms part of their company. Chaucer describes the travelers in a pleasant and grotesque point leaving them in awe. The pilgrims take a ceremonial dinner where the proprietor of the inn makes a suggestion to the team that each of them narrates two tales on the way to Canterbury and two tales on the way during their return home. The owner of the tavern offered to go with the pilgrims and act as the judge of the tales that they would tell. To add on, the proprietor promised a free dinner at the inn to the individual who would tell the best story during the pilgrimage. After sleeping for a while, the pilgrimage started the following morning, and tale-telling commenced.
During the pilgrimage, the travelers told diverse types of stories such as the lives of saints, sermons, humorous and love stories. Some of the pilgrims told tales whereby the character of the story displayed humiliation against the profession of another pilgrim. A good example is the Miller who told a story that regarded a carpenter who had a wife that committed adultery with some clerk.
