1 Bennie stated that she hates assimilation. She defined assimilation as "someone who is willing to give up his own culture and submerge himself completely in the dominant, and in this case oppressive culture! (Hansberry, 1994, 2.1)." Bennie expressed her stand against assimilation by performing a folk dance of Nigeria and cutting her hair to let it grow the natural and nappy way without the influence of the “white people” straightened hair style. At the point of view of Bennie, her gestures are meant to accept and explore her African heritage. It is not anti-conformity since she just wants to express her racial Identity the natural way. Her gestures also meant that, even though she is following the culture of the dominant, she is proud to visibly show her African identity so that her heritage shall not be forgotten. However, these gestures were viewed by George as eccentric that goes outside the conventions of society by stating that “being eccentric means being natural (Hansberry, 1994, 2.1).”
2 I prefer Asagai more than George. Asagai is the friend of Beneatha that encourages her to get in touch with her African heritage and be truthful to herself. Asagai shows Beneatha that the identity of an individual cannot be destroyed by the dominant culture. Also, Beneatha prefers Asagai's personality since he supports her self-expressions and independence. On the other hand, George have a shallower point of view in life and usually mocks Beneatha's self-expression when it comes to her African identity. George only view Beneatha as a nice-looking girl. George further implied that physical beauty is only thing that Beneatha would need for men to like her.
3 Mama bought a house. Travis and Ruth are both happy when mama revealed that she bought for the family. Travis happily stated that he always wanted to live in a house of their own. Initially, Ruth was very glad for the purchase of mama where she even praised God for the blessing of a new home. However, when mama said the location of the house that is in Clybourne Park, Ruth became worried since there are no colored people living in that area. Walter, on the other hand, was bitter because he felt like mama butchered his dream. Walter wanted the insurance money to finance his business idea of starting a liquor store, but mama didn't like that idea. Beneatha wasn’t in the scene when mama revealed her purchase, but it is implied that she is happy with mama’s decision since Beneatha was excited to move to their new home.
4 Mrs. Johnson gave the news that colored people were bombed out of their place. Mrs. Johnson further stated that white folks in Chicago are treating colored people worse than they used to by pushing them out of their homes. Mrs. Johnson even implied that maybe the next news that will come out are the names of the Youngers by creating a headline, which states "Negroes Invade Clybourne Park-Bombed (Hansberry, 1959, 2.2)."
