The Revolutionary War Students Name Institutional Affiliation 1776 marks the year in which America gained its independence. However, it took them five years to win their freedom from the British. Therefore, the achievement of such freedom occurred in 19th October 1781 whereby Charles Cornwallis, a British general, surrendered their troops in Yorktown. Charles had brought 8000 British troops to Virginias Yorktown. Lucky enough, the troops expected to get help from the ships that were to be sent from New York. The ships did not arrive, and therefore, this made it easy for the other thirteen colonies to beat the British empire. The turning point is a significant moment for the US government because it gave them an opportunity to create a government and run activities without having to follow British law. The US formed a government that was not governed by a king, but that was rather led by people. The new government was formed by the people through an election, and power was balanced to ensure that no one was in a position to become a king. The US has had this kind of government over the years whereby rules are laid down in the constitution. The citizens have the freedom of electing the leaders that they deem fit to be in office. The turning point occurred as a result of the enmity that the British empire had developed with the rest of the colonies. The colonies felt that they were not adequately represented in the British government and needed a fair government. In addition, the British government was also making unfair taxes towards the colonies and therefore, they needed representation in the British government for them to accept to paying high taxes and living according to the ways of the British law (Steele, 2017). This resulted in various protests against the British government until the war erupted. The war was triggered by the fact that the colonies were in support of the United States of America in its attempt to overtake New York. For instance, George Washington received a lot of help from the French, whereby the French army prevented British ships from entering the York River. General Jean-Baptiste also led some of the French troops that helped America in defeating the British empire. The French general and George Washington had gathered a troop of 17000 soldiers that was made to take back Yorktown from the British.
