Energy Efficiency, Demand Flexibility, and Demand Response Programs

Essay Instructions:

You can summarize the major points presented by the speaker. This summary must go beyond the speaker’s abstract. The last paragraph of each summary should be your personal response to what you heard. If a talk is “over your head” technically, please be aware that most speakers’ major points are not in the technical details, but rather in the value/importance (present or future) of the subject matter of the talk. The length of the summary in the standard format should be at least 400 words, but no longer than two single-spaced pages.

Energy Efficiency, Demand Flexibility, and Demand Response Programs
Energy efficiency refers to the persistent and maintained decrease in energy demand as equated to the baseline consumption to offer better levels of service. These programs were put in place in a bid to promote the adoption of electricity end uses that reduced consumption in residential, commercial, and industrial market sectors. The technical potential of controlling end-users to actively alter electricity consumption in comparison to the baseline of passive operation states is the definition of demand flexibility, where programs are designed to allow consumers to manage electricity consumption. This is usually aimed at increasing energy savings to the customer and service providers.
Actualization of demand flexibility is dependent on customer response. The active alteration of energy generation and demand on a limited time frame in response to price changes and command signals as compared to the baseline consumption that may result in lower levels of service is what entails demand response. Demand response opportunity programs are of two varieties; non-dispatchable and dispatchable opportunities. While non-dispatchable opportunities require consistent and dependable signals that would influence customer reaction, dispatchable opportunities use sensible and precise utilities that send signals to consumers as a prompt to alter the time and quantity of energy consumption. Integrated program opportunities are of three types; energy-efficient/demand flexible, energy-efficient/demand flexible/ non-dispatchable demand response and ...
