Assignment 2: A short policy brief (300 – 400 words) on ‘best’ energy solutions for a selected geographical area.
Debates on energy solutions have been vigorous and involve a wide array of actors, including activists, civil society groups, academics, policymakers, corporations, and politicians. The active participation and engagement of this varied group brings onboard significantly different and contested voices on energy solutions, contributing to a more complicated and prolonged energy policy making process. Given this context, grounds for energy policy making include the realm of politics where the most powerful voices, not necessarily the most convincing or scientifically viable, take center stage and are adequately represented in energy policies.
As a student of energy and society in the University of Toronto, you have studied the dominant perspectives/visions in energy solutions and understand how discourses are framed to represent these visions in the energy debate. Considering your knowledge in this area, you are required to write a short policy brief to a policy making in the energy sector to help address the question: “what should be our energy policy in the next 25 years”?
This assignment is different from an opinion piece. It requires an objective review of the present energy policy environment, current and potential challenges arising from implementation of existing energy options, and a recommendation on ‘best’ energy solutions. Given the assignment objective, you are advised to pay attention to the following in your essay.
Identify a geographical area and characterise its energy situation (policy and challenges)
With the support of research evidence, discuss the energy challenges, policy dynamics, and recommendations for future energy solutions for the selected geographical area.
The above considerations should be addressed in a well structured and laid-out essay with an introduction, discussion, and conclusions sections. You should ensure that your essay is formal, without technical terms and jargons, and generally suited for non-experts. Essay Format
Your essay should have the following:
Title
Introduction that identifies and characterises a geographical context (i.e. city, province, country, region or global).
A body where the energy challenges and recommendations are discussed within the context of scientific evidence. Please reference at least 5 sources in your discussion.
Recommendation section that outlines how identified future energy solutions can be implemented
Conclusion: a summary of main point and final words for the reader
Bibliography/footnotes
Total word-count excluding references

In addition, you are required to observe the following:
Write in formal language and avoid the use of jargons and technical terms
Your essay should cite at least 5 publications from reputable sources. Citations from Wikipedia will not be accepted.
Citation can be in any style, but this should be consistent in the essay.
Use any legible/readable font size and style, with at least 1.5 line spacing.
You are reminded that the work should be 300-400 words in length.

The current energy situation in the world is characterized by increasing demand and rising prices for the resource, as well as the development of countermeasures to deal with global warming. It follows that the primary energy sources traditionally consist of fossil fuels (coal, oil, and gas) which have substantially replaced wood over the last century. Moreover, nuclear energy has notably supplemented the fossil fuels in the last few decades (Bauer, 2015). While these energy sources continue to propel automobiles, power industries, and businesses as well as meeting a host of many other energy needs, they are not devoid of shortcomings such as causing pollution and global warming, as well as the evolution of toxic radioactive waste. Consequently, there have been numerous debates at local, national, and international levels concerning the use of alternative sources of energy that will minimize such negative impacts. This paper presents a policy brief on the energy solutions that should be implemented globally in the next 25 years, in a bid to remedy the current energy challenges.
Scientific evidence has shown that the current use of fossil fuels is a big threat to humans and the natural environment as a whole. Some of the negative impacts take the form of externalities such as pollution or land degradation and are easy to see; yet others are not obvious and occur over time such as a rise in sea-level or the development of respiratory diseases and other illnesses. Burning fossil fuels emits numerous types of pollutants that have an enormous toll on the environment and public health. To begin with, the concentration of Carbon dioxide has increased by 47% from 280 ppm at the beginning of the industrial age to the current 412 ppm (Buis, 2020). Human activities involving the burning of carbon are responsible for this rise in the concentration of the gas and subsequent global warming.
Moreover, burning coal emits Sulphur dioxide which mixes with water and other chemicals in the air and lead to acidic rain or other harmful particulate matter.
