In high attitudes, the oxygen capacity is low as compared to sea levels; this helps an athlete to have more endurance at the sea levels because his blood and muscles are able to adjust easily. The body of the athlete changes in a number of ways. The athlete’s body decreases the heart rate, increases the mitochondria and oxidative enzymes, and increases the red blood cells and excretion of a base by the kidney to reduce lactic acid. This enhances his or her performance (Simpson, 2007).
Training in high altitudes, like other performance enhancers, for example hypoxic devices and doping cannot be considered cheating.
