Going Green the Right Way: Emergence of discourses on energy options

Essay Instructions:

Assignment 1: An op-ed (300 – 400 words) contextualizing the emergence of discourses on energy options.
This assignment requires you to take a position on the energy debate and from your standpoint discuss why there are emerging discourses and voices on future energy options. As we indicated in class, there are contested positions on energy options which we can put into three broad categories for the purpose of analyses:
Expansionists/free market thinking: Determination of energy options should be left to forces of demand and supply with the assumption that unhindered/unregulated energy market will result in a win-win situation for investors and consumers.
*Note: With profit/private property and capital accumulation motives, energy companies/businesses and investors tend to favour energy options with the greatest returns to investment, and that is fossil fuels.
Interventionist/green thinking: Energy production should not compromise the livability of the world, and the sustainability of nature. This group favours renewal energy options.
*Note: Current levels of energy supply from renewable sources demonstrates that replacing fossil fuels with renewable energy is not a viable energy option.
The middle ground thinking: This group recognises the advantages and disadvantages of both fossil fuels and renewable energy solutions, and thus, argues for a good mix of both in a way that guarantees energy security while protecting the environment and nature as a common property.
*Note: Scholars and advocates have questioned how such a vision can be realised. Will there ever be a time when both free market and green thinker agree to share grounds, and make compromises?
Your op-ed should be fixed on one of the three positions. Please note that an op-ed is an opinion piece. It is not an academic writing and does not seek to present a balanced perspective. The target audience is the general public. Please review op-ed writing guidelines from U of TLinks to an external site., McGill University (Links to an external site.), and Harvard (Links to an external site.). For this assignment, pay attention the following.
Your op-ed should have a title (catchy enough to draw the attention of editors and readers).
Identify the geographical context that relates to your work or the scale of your analysis (i.e. city, province, country, region or global).
Support your personal position with some basic evidence. I am not asking for extensive citation.
Leave a conclusion that will last in the minds of readers.
Formatting and referencing
There is no hard stance on font style and size, and line spacing. But know that you are appealing to a reader. Therefore, you will want to have your work in the best possible format.
This is a short piece. More so, editors like references imbedded as links. Hyperlinks should be limited to single works, short phrases (not more than three words) or a number. For example, hyperlinks should be associated with only the name of an author instead of a full quotation.
You are reminded that your work should be 300-400 words in length.

Going Green the Right Way
Nothing makes more sense to me on the energy debate than a Native American proverb, “We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children.” Accordingly, the threat of climate change cannot guarantee a vibrant future without a shift to cleaner energy. However, there’s little to be optimistic about today as efforts towards going green yield little. Rallying calls to environmental conservation are disconnected and stifled beneath the durable competing powers of capitalism and profiteering. A few people are doing the right things: reusing and recycling. I am firmly in favor of renewable energy options, but many things need to change if we are to get anywhere.
Environmentally sound gestures are commonplace across the world, albeit with no significant impacts in the grand scheme of things. However, each American will still produce more than twice the global average of greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, the threat of global warming will always be potent and thus cause extreme weather conditions, loss of biodiversity, destruction of rainforests, among other negative impacts. If strategies for going green to be active, global and regional energy systems must shift progressively towards lower-carbon sources. While substantial results may be yielded, they may not be significant enough to secure the environment for future generations. In reality, it’s not possible to have a billion people across the world emitting no carbon dioxide at all.
The demand for fossil fuels has always been on an upward trend across the world as it is more economical and efficient for most industries. Therefore, it will take considerable effort to change the current state and have a genuinely global...
