My Traditions
My culture can be perceived in terms of key areas like religion, music, cuisine, festivals, social beliefs, and literature & theatre. At home, there is no specific religious affiliations. This can be attributed to my ethnic background, diverse religious groups ranging from Hinduism, Roman Catholicism, Methodist, Taoism, and traditional African religions. In my home, therefore, there is religious freedom. We celebrate almost all of the significant festivals in Trinidad because they bring family members together. These include the Carnival, Diwali, the Hosay, and Christmas. While my family almost always prefers the African blend of cuisines like stewed chicken, homemade ginger beer, and red bean, Indian, Arabian, and European cuisines also feature more often.
Music is an essential defining part of our traditions. Everyone in my family listens to Calypso. The beats and tune tend to spur joy, fun, and social interactions through dancing. Another type of music I sometimes hear at home is the Soca. Soca is a blend of Indian and Claypso tunes. These types of music feature more often when we have visitors with roots in Trinidad.
