Music Genres and use of music in film
(1) Using the overall discussion of genre as a guide, briefly analyze a (sub-) genre of your choosing. (300 words)
Humans communicate in many ways. One of the most used tools in this exercise is music. Music is the art of arranging sounds to make a composition using melody, rhythm, timbre, and harmony. Many other characteristics separate many genres of music regarding how they utilize various elements to create their composition. A genre is a conventional category that identifies a particular class of songs as identifiable to a specific culture or tradition, its roots, and its place. Genres include popular music, art music, religious and secular music. Characterization and classification of the latter are not absolute, and thus sometimes, they may overlap. Some popular genres include country, electronic, funk, jazz, Latin, reggae, rock, polka, and soul music. I have a particular interest in Rock music.
The rock music is broad. It was first composed in the United States as “rock and roll,” from the late 1940s to the early 1950s. Rock and roll music morphed to a more varied range in the mid-1960s continuing to date. It came from African American music's blues and rhythm and borrowed from country music. Some of the good rock and roll music include Elvis Presley’s Hound Dog (https://youtu.be/lzQ8GDBA8Is), which Larry Birnbaum described as an emblem of the rock and roll revolution (235). Another great memorable hit was the stairway to heaven by Led Zeppelin (  HYPERLINK "https://youtu.be/QkF3oxziUI4" \t "_blank" https://youtu.be/QkF3oxziUI4 ).
Rock music morphed and took various approaches. The process gave birth to forms like Nu Metal, Emo, hair metal, punk, black metal, country, folk, blues, rockabilly, Goth, Grunge, hardcore, soul, death metal, industrial and soft rock, among many others. Some of the famous singers of this genre include rolling stones, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Queen, Guns and Roses, and Aerosmith. Like in many other genres, Rock music varies from songs with lyrical themes like the pressure of life, politics, fear of loneliness, war, and journey of life. However, most bands, especially in recent times, have sung about the theme of love.
(2) Choose a song or piece that is significant to your personal identity (e.g. in terms of worldview, an interest/hobby, a memory, a subculture, etc.), and relate the musical features and cultural context to reflect on its significance to you. (300 words)
Music, as a perfect way to communicate and even explain situations and emotions or feelings to people in different cultures, resonates with certain songs that have specific vibrations, melody, and message. For example, I enjoy Kelly Clarkson’s “People Like Us” song. The rock and roll jam was written by Meghan Kabir and produced by Greg Kurstin. It is emotio...
