Music Review
Words are a powerful tool that can be used to communicate important messages. Feminism is a cause that has a very important message to share with so many. A single billboard, a lone conversation, or just one viral video would never reach all those whom need to hear about feminism. Music, however, reaches the masses that feminism should address. Music artists use their platform to enlighten consumers of issues everywhere, specifically the lack of advancement concerning women’s issues. A specific artist, Victoria Monét, has made it her issue and expresses so through song.
Victoria Monét is a feminist artist, who makes music for all. It is amazing to listen to artistry that ranges from breakup tunes to lesbian sex jams to upbeat party hits. Her songs draw in women, men, queer, and straight people alike considering her relatability (McPeake). Monét started performing at an early age, and was involved in the church choir when she was growing up. Through her music, she challenges women to take up their space and pursue their dream. She is an acknowledge feminist who is focused on songwriting and performing. Most women experience challenges in being recognized for their contribution and work. However, we can see that Monét continues to be an influential figure in the feminist movement, particularly through the use of her music. She has composed numerous songs that promote the feminist ideals. A simple analysis of the lyrics shows that Monét is focused on advancing feminist ideals. Her aim is to keep pushing forward and express herself without limitations.
There is no unique Damascus-moment for Monét on her journey towards feminism. What we can perceive is that her values and perspectives were shaped by experiences. Through her life, she has faced more than her fair share, and her music attests to her courage and defiance to walk through all obstacles. She has continued to build her career as a single, although she has been involved with numerous music groups in the past (Clark-Kwateng and Varona). She attests that she is focused on creating positive energy and promoting confidence among the audience. In Tweet she made in 2018, she acknowledged that she was single after going “through a difficult break up.” Probably, this was the moment that Monét took on his feminist side completely. She is now more focused about her personal life, and embracing her sexuality a queer. Monét is always confident to let people understand that her sexuality is part of her identity, and no one can take that away.
