There is no universally agreed definition of the term “gang” in the United States. However, the federal definition of the term according to the Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security is that it is an association of three or more individuals whose members have a collective identity and whose purpose is to engage in criminal activity using violence or intimidation. The state definition of a street gang is any organization or group of three or more persons whose primary activity is to commit criminal acts (National Institute of Justice, 2011). There are several types of gangs defined by their ethnic affiliation, structure, or membership. They include the national street gang, the prison gang, and the local street gang. The groups are found all round the country.
