Assignment 1: How can the efforts of the Temperance Movement and the U.S. response to alcohol be explained, at least in part, in terms of racial prejudice? Were there any similarities between the Temperance Movement efforts and those of state and local levels of government who sought to control opium use among the Chinese? For more information on properly citing sources in your assignments please refer to the APA 6th edition manual. While the assignments are to include an examination on current research of a particular problem, they also need include the student's carful and informed analysis of the problem. Remember each assignment post needs to be submitted as a Word Doc attachment. The assignment needs be written in 12' font, using Times Roman. Margins will also need to be 1'. The student should download the assignment document and should follow the directions for each separate project. Each assignment should be completed and uploaded as an attachment to the professor in the student\'s Student Folder by the due date as a WORD DOC. Please submit these assignments as attachments and save them as under their assignment designation, i.e. assignment 1, assignment 2 ect., and your fist and last name. Each assignment will need to include the following: - The original question at the top of the essay (serves as the abstract) - The body of your answer in several paragraphs - A titled reference section that has been formatted according to APA 6th ed style. - A minimum of seven to ten references per assignment. One reference can include the textbook. However, you will need to include several additional academic sources. These sources should consist of scholarly journals that have been peer reviewed and academically based books. Web sources can be used, though they should come from credible sources such as government agencies, academics and private agencies with a strong reputation within the community they serve. How can the efforts of the Temperance Movement and the U.S. response to alcohol be explained, at least in part, in terms of racial prejudice?
Temperance movement can generally be viewed as a term that catalogs varieties of approaches that aim to curb alcohol consumption to complete abstinence of liquor. This term, however, as Byrne et al (2008) states, still encompasses a variety of definitions amongst moderates and taletellers. The view of temperance as part of the nineteenth-century social reform revolution is widely held by many and in actuality this has affected modern-day American democracy greatly especially as witnessed during the century of intense demographic, economic and social unrest.
Temperance is not only unique to America s countries such as Ireland are known to have imported this movement too. In fact, in Ireland, temperance is considered as one of the most important and popular reform movement of the nineteenth century. This movement is also document as to have started many other gender-based movements such as Women`s Christian Temperance Movement (WCTU), which was established in 1874, and the more militaristic movement, the Anti-Saloon League, founded in 1893, These two movements among others would later form the platform for addressing more pressing issues such as family affairs and articulate issues such as political reforms and social change (Abadinsky, 2009).
Equally, some African Americans such as Frederic Douglas are historically credited to have positively contributed and taken part in these movements.
