The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has a pivotal obligation to protect the United States’ borders and manage people and goods in and out of the country. Under the secretary's leadership, the DHS is also responsible for maritime security, enforcement of immigration laws, port security, border security, cybersecurity, and aviation security (Bensman, 2019). As a result, DHS secures the United States from a wide range of threats. Just as covered in course readings, Counterterrorism, border security, and critical infrastructures are the main recurring issues that impact the United States’ security.
Counterterrorism
Counterterrorism entails using coordinated approaches and strategies to enhance national security in the United States. Over the years, the country has encountered preventing terrorist attacks as a significant challenge despite having enough resources and skilled personnel (Kim, 2010). Terrorism affects the security of the United States by compromising the effective operation of critical infrastructures in the United States. Counterterrorism has emerged as a recurring issue as a result of the concerns of the government in preventing terror attacks while enhancing border security. Since terrorist groups such as ISIS and al-Qaeda have continued to plot attacks against the United States, the Department of Homeland Security focuses on defeating the adversaries. A key strategy to prevent terrorism is to use modern technological systems to detect explosives and other weapons to deter the efforts of terrorists.
